Meet Di Zhao — Master Flute Maker
Mr. Di Zhao's journey in flute making is one of extraordinary dedication and skill. After graduating from the Wuhan Conservatory, he served as principal flutist at the Hunan Broadcast Orchestra before joining the National Ensemble Orchestra of China in Beijing in 1984 — a position he held until 1990.
In pursuit of his master's degree, Mr. Zhao came to the United States and attended Indiana University. In 1992, he enrolled in the Band Instrument Repair program at West Iowa Technical School, and by the end of that year had joined the legendary Verne Q. Powell Flutes — launching a 15-year career in world-class flute making.
During his tenure at Powell, Mr. Zhao mastered every aspect of flute production — from padding and head joint making to stringing and body construction. His instruments have been played by hundreds of renowned flutists around the world. In 2002, he was promoted to Vice President of Quality.
Mr. Zhao has also served as Vice President and General Manager at Williams Hayes Flute Inc., and has provided consulting expertise to leading companies including Sonare and Haynes, helping establish their manufacturing operations in China.
Today, Mr. Zhao runs his own flute company — and Di Zhao Flutes are recognized globally as instruments of outstanding quality and value.
