Kathryn Blocki’s passion
for excellence in teaching is demonstrated by the consistent success of her
students. Whether it is transforming an autistic child’s fear of touching the metal on the flute into the
freedom to express himself, or helping a gifted child win a competition playing
the Ibert Concerto; her zeal to help every student reach their fullest
potential is unmistakable.
Her clinics on teaching the flute have been
enthusiastically received at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic (Chicago 2009)
Tennessee Music Ed. Assoc. 2008, Ohio Music Ed. Assoc. 2006, Texas Music Ed.
Assoc. 2005, Inspirational Flute Masterclass, Greenville, SC 2005-2010,
National Flute Association 2000-2009, IUSB Flute Festivals 2004 and 2003,
Florida Flute Festival 2001, Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair 2005 and 2003, and
colleges and universities. At the 2007 National Flute Convention she taught the
Junior Masterclass, presented a clinic on tone production as a Conn/Selmer
artist, and led a workshop entitled Syrinx:
Inspiration, Integrity, and Interpretation.
Publications include
the Blocki Flute Method Book I and Teacher's Manual (winner of the NFA Newly
Published Music Award): Blocki Flute Method Book II with Teacher's Manual and
Ensemble Book, & Syrinx: Rhythmic Teaching Edition (licensed through the
Theodore Presser Co). In 2008, she published two new duet books for the
beginning and intermediate student. She is also the creator of the Great
Beginnings for the New Flutist DVD, and patent holder for the Pneumo Pro Wind Director
(a flute training tool). Before writing the Blocki Flute Method, Kathy received grants to study Suzuki Flute, Kodally, Orff and Dalcroze.
Previously, she was a
member of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Chautauqua Festival Orchestra, and a
soloist with the American Wind Symphony and Elkhart Symphony. As a past faculty
member of Goshen College, she taught flute, flute choir, and aural music
skills. She graduated with high honorsfrom IU Bloomington, Indiana School of Music and highest honors from
ASU, and has had the privilege of studying with Eric Hoover, James Pellerite
(past principle flutist with the Philadelphia Philharmonic), Samuel Baron,
(past Julliard School of Music Prof.) and Bernard Goldberg (past principle
flutist of Pittsburgh Symphony).Currently, she serves
as a member of the National Flute Association’s Pedagogy Committee.
Rebecca Hovan teaches at Indiana University South Bend and GoshenCollege.She is a member of the National Flute
Association and served the NFA as Chair of the Pedagogy Committee for five
years.As a member of the Pedagogy
Committee, she participated in the preparation of several of the Committee's
publications, a graded list of flute repertoire (2004) and a companion
publication listing etudes, daily studies, and method books (2005).Most recently, the Committee published these
two publications in one volume entitled Selected
Flute Repertoire and Studies:A Graded
Guide.Rebecca is also co-author of
the Blocki Flute Method Book II, an intermediate method for flute
(2003, 2nd edition 2005), and Supplementary Duets for Blocki
Flute Method Book II, (2006). As a performer, she
appears regularly in recital and with various ensembles in the Northern Indiana area.She has performed on programs at several conventions of the National
Flute Association.Her training includes
a Master of Music from the University
of North Texas where she
was a Teaching Fellow in Flute and studied with Mary Karen Clardy.She was a winner of the National Flute
Association’s Masterclass Competition and has presented various pedagogy
workshops for the NFA, colleges and universities, and various flute
festivals.Recent activities include recording
her first CD, A Silver Christmas, released
